Thousands still without power in state’s north

Residents in Launceston and the state’s north are being urged to keep an eye on the TasAlert website and stay up to date on weather conditions which have battered Tasmania over the last 48 hours.

Thousands of residents across the state’s north remain without power this morning with the TasNetworks website showing more than 200 outages across the region.

The SES has responded to more than 340 requests for help, a large percentage of those in the north, as a result of high winds and heavy rain.

It comes after Launceston Airport recorded peaks gusts of around 130kmh on Sunday night.

Residents who have lost power to their homes in Launceston across the weekend are being invited to make use of phone charging facilities and hot showers at the Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

Motorists are being reminded by Tasmania Police to drive to the conditions and be aware of the possibility of flooding on local roads as well as fallen trees and power lines.
