Jake Lloyd, who famously played young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, has given a positive mental health update following his schizophrenia diagnosis.
At 35, Lloyd discussed his journey with mental health in an interview with Star Wars: Timelines co-author Clayton Sandell. Lloyd and his mother, Lisa, shared that he recently completed an 18-month stay at a mental health facility in Southern California. During this time, he received treatment after experiencing a psychotic break in March 2023, when he had an alarming incident on a busy road.
Lloyd is now at a new rehabilitation center, where he continues his treatment but has more freedom. He told Sandell, “I’m feeling pretty good.” He also mentioned that he’s accepting ongoing therapy, medication, and support from family.
Lisa explained that Lloyd’s struggle with mental health began in high school. She also revealed that he has a condition called anosognosia, which means he wasn’t always aware of his illness. However, Jake now finds his medication helpful, calling it “a cushion” for his emotions.
Although his mental health challenges are serious, Jake believes hitting “rock bottom” helped him fully embrace treatment. Lisa expressed optimism, saying, “Jake’s actually getting so much better.”
Lloyd, who left acting in 2001, remains a fan of Star Wars and even plays the video games. He’s grateful for fans’ continued support, saying, “I really do appreciate the time that’s been taken on us.”
